The Kingdom of Bhutan, one of the smallest kingdoms on earth, lies cradled in the very heart of Himalayas. Wrapped between two mighty countries it is like a sacred jewel nestling in the wool-like cluster of clouds that give it an ethereal quality. It is a landlocked South Asian nation situated between Tibet (now part of the People's Republic of China) and India.
Bhutan is one of the most isolated nations in the world; foreign influences and tourism are heavily regulated by the government to preserve its traditional Tibetan-Buddhist culture and some areas like Sakten are off-limits to tourists. It also the only country which recognises Buddhism as it's official religion otherwise known as DRUKPA MAHAYANA BUDDHISM. Bhutan is often described as the last surviving refuge of traditional Himalayan Buddhist culture. The official language is Dzongkha.
Bhutan has been a monarchy since 1907. The different dzongkhags were united under the leadership of the Trongsa Penlop. The current king, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, has made some moves toward constitutional government.
Bhutan with its soaring snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows and densely forested hills and ravines abounding in exotic flora and fauna, justifiably boasts of fantastic views of the world. From May to August, its hills are sprinkled with a breathtaking variety of flowers and decorated with waterfalls and streams that flow in wild abandon.
